Week of (Semana de): March 23rd– March 27th
Theme of the Week (Tema de la Semana): "My country/ Mi Pais"
Hello Sapitos
Parents,
This week we will
continue learning about cultural diversity and traditions in different countries.
This time it is Peru’s turn. Our Sapitos will learn the three regions of Peru,
how Easter is celebrated in Ayacucho, and they will make a virtual tour to
Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca city in Cuzco (3:42
min. video in history.com), considered by
UNESCO as a World Heritage in 1983 and as one of the Seven
Wonders of the World in 2007. We will sing and
dance to traditional Peruvian music, and of course, we will have the
opportunity to taste Peruvian cuisine.
We will also have a
special activity to celebrate in March: “Brain Injury Awareness Month.” Our
Sapitos will learn how to play safely to avoid accidents and protect their
brain from injuries.
Do you know that
children, age three to five, develop initiative vs. guilt in the social
dimension of Erikson? We would like to share with you what David Elkind
summarizes in his book Giants in the Nursery
"...the child,
age three to five, is pretty much master of her body.... The child can thus
initiate motor activities of various sorts on her own and no longer merely
respond to or imitate the actions of other children. The same holds true of the
child's language and fantasy activities. Erikson argues that the social
dimension that appears at this stage has initiative at one of its poles and
guilt at the other.
"Whether a child will leave this stage with his sense of initiative outbalancing his sense of guilt depends to a considerable extent on how parents respond to the child's self-initiated activities. A child who is given the freedom and the opportunity to initiate motor play... has his sense of initiative reinforced. Initiative is also reinforced when parents answer the child's questions and do not deride or inhibit fantasy or play activity.

Initiative is also reinforced when parents answer the child's questions and do not deride or inhibit fantasy or play activity.
"On the other
hand, if a child is made to feel that her motor activity is always noisy and
disruptive, that posing questions is a nuisance, and that her play is silly and
stupid, then she may develop a sense of guilt over self-initiated activities
that will persist through later life stages."

Guilt”, article in Exchange Everyday website, March 10, 2015).

Sammy the frog, our traveling
pet, will visit Eva Sofia’s house this week. We hope you have fun spending time
together. Please, don’t forget to record your activities to share with your
classmates and teachers.
Friendly Reminders:
- There will be a sign-up sheet outside the classroom
if you would like to have a conference (Friday 27th) with the teachers about
your child’s Report Card.
- Please, avoid
bringing special toys to the classroom, it hurts other children’s feelings
and we don’t have enough room in our cubbies to keep them safely. Thank
you for your cooperation.
- Don’t
forget to bring your Family art project to be displayed in the classroom.
- Our Easter celebration will be on April 2. There will be a sign-up sheet for the parents who would like to send Easter eggs and their fillings (separately) by March 30. Remember to avoid nuts (allergens) and hard candy that could present a choking hazard for our children. The items should be packaged and don’t forget to send a basket for your child to collect the eggs.
- please bring a helmet for our activity about safety.
- Friday March 19th: Bring your child’s helmet
for our Special Activity

and our Sapitos love this special time with you.
Have a great weekend!
Miss Amparo and Miss
